Microneedling for building collagen

Updated: Aug 23, 2021

Microneedling has become an incredibly popular treatment these days, and it is no wonder that clients of all ages have grown to love this easy, minimally-invasive treatment option. It has met and exceeded its claims to decrease many of the most common signs of aging, and it has even proven popular among the younger crowd that wants to prevent signs of aging while also getting an improved skin glow.

This treatment is sometimes called collagen induction therapy, a somewhat scientific yet appropriate name. Collagen is a type of protein fiber located in the deeper tissues of the skin and in other connective tissues. While it is the most abundant protein in the body, found in everything from the blood vessels to the bones, it is most frequently discussed in relation to the skin. This is because a decrease in collagen in the skin can be extremely visible, creating poorly textured, sagging and wrinkled skin. With collagen induction therapy, or microneedling, we can improve the amount of collagen in your skin by stimulating your body’s natural production of the fiber.

To understand how microneedling improves collagen production in the skin, you must first understand how microneedling works. During this treatment, we roll a special device over your skin. Most of our patients are comfortable during the procedure. During the treatment, many tiny micro-channels are created in the skin. Professional microneedling treatments, such as the ones that we provide at Skindulgenz, go deep enough into the dermis of the skin to reach the areas where healing and change occur.

As the body rushes to heal the treated areas, oxygen and nutrient-rich blood rush to the area. This stimulates the formation of new skin cells, new blood vessels and new collagen proteins. Over a period of weeks to months, the continued increase in collagen will lead to better-textured skin. Additionally, as collagen increases, elastin fibers are also stimulated to increase, creating more elastic skin that does not sag or droop so easily.

We can use microneedling for a variety of reasons in our clinic. Most of our patients request it to treat common signs of aging on the face, such as lines and wrinkles. The increased collagen production lifts up these depressed lines, causing them to smooth out over time. Beside treating lines and wrinkles, we may also use microneedling to treat scars and other blemishes.
